NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks opened lower, pushing the Dow Jones Industrial Average under 7,000 for the first time since Oct. 28, 1997, after insurance giant American International Group Inc. (
AIG: 0.48, +0.06, +15.5%) reported a $61.7 billion quarterly loss. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (
$INDU: 6,959.63, -103.30, -1.5%) fell 132.93 points to 6,930. The S&P 500 (
$SPX: 722.81, -12.28, -1.7%) dropped 15.05 points to 720.04, while the Nasdaq Composite (
COMP 1,364.47, -13.37, -1.0%) shed 18.37 points to 1,359.47.
